Facing a medical bill, urgent repair or temporary cash-flow gap, should you pledge family jewellery for a gold loan or take a personal loan without collateral?
Do not decide by speed or the advertised rate alone. Ask whether you would rather pledge an asset or borrow without collateral. Jewellery may carry family memories; an unsecured loan can still be costly.
In August 2026, Reuters reported Aditya Birla Capital’s plan for around 1,000 gold-loan branches over three years. Market expansion does not make a loan suitable for everyone.

What is a gold loan?
A gold loan is secured by eligible gold jewellery, ornaments or coins pledged to an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC. The lender assesses gold content and applies the relevant loan-to-value ratio, or LTV.
You remain the owner, but the lender holds the gold until full repayment or settlement. Following default, it may be auctioned under the agreement and required process. Gold loan eligibility still depends on KYC, lender policy and applicable checks.
What is an unsecured personal loan?
An unsecured personal loan requires no collateral. The lender generally considers income, work stability, credit history, existing EMIs, recent enquiries, repayment capacity and internal rules.
Approval, amount and pricing vary. A high score does not guarantee approval, and a pre-approved offer may not be the most affordable.
Gold loan vs personal loan: the main differences
The central difference between gold loan and personal loan options is security: it is a secured vs unsecured loan decision.
| Factor | Gold loan | Unsecured personal loan |
| Security | Eligible gold is pledged | No collateral |
| Main underwriting basis | Eligible gold value plus applicable borrower checks | Credit profile, income, employment and repayment capacity |
| Risk to an asset | Gold may be auctioned after default and due process | No pledged asset; default can damage credit history and trigger recovery |
| Interest rate | May be lower because the loan is secured | May be higher because it is unsecured |
| Loan amount | Based partly on gold value and LTV | Based on profile, income and lender policy |
| Repayment | May use EMIs, interest servicing or a bullet structure | Generally scheduled EMIs |
| Tenure | Often relatively short | May offer wider tenure choices |
| Processing | Gold assay and valuation | Identity, income and credit assessment |
| May suit | Borrowers comfortable pledging gold | Borrowers who qualify and want no collateral |
Features vary by lender. Check the Key Fact Statement (KFS) and agreement.
Gold loan LTV, explained simply
LTV is the relationship between the outstanding loan and the recognised value of the pledged gold. For a bullet loan—where principal and interest are due at maturity—the calculation uses the total amount repayable at maturity.
Under the RBI framework, the maximum LTV ceilings for consumption loans against eligible gold or silver collateral are:
| Total consumption loan amount per borrower | Maximum LTV |
| Up to ₹2.5 lakh | 85% |
| Above ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh | 80% |
| Above ₹5 lakh | 75% |
These are ceilings, not promised amounts; a lender may offer less. The RBI Annual Report 2025–26 confirms these limits.
Invoice value is not lending value. The RBI’s 2025 Directions require valuation by gold content and actual purity, excluding stones, gems and other components. The lender uses the lower of the preceding 30-day average closing price or previous day’s closing price for that purity from a permitted reference. Deductions must be explained.
Regulated entities had to adopt these directions by 1 April 2026. Earlier loans remain governed by the previously applicable guidelines.
Which loan is likely to cost less?
A gold loan interest rate may be lower because it is secured, but this does not ensure a lower total cost.
Compare these items for each actual offer:
- APR
- Processing fee
- Valuation or assaying charges
- Documentation charges
- Auction-related charges, where applicable
- EMI or other repayment schedule
- Total amount repayable
- Net amount you will receive after deductions
- Late-payment or penal charges
- Prepayment and foreclosure conditions
APR, or Annual Percentage Rate, combines interest and specified charges. The RBI’s KFS framework requires it for covered loans. Compare KFS documents using the same amount and realistic period.
The biggest risk: gold loan auction rules
If you fail to repay, the jewellery may eventually be auctioned, causing financial and emotional loss. One missed payment does not mean immediate auction; the trigger and timeline depend on the agreement. RBI rules require that:
- The agreement must describe auction triggers and procedure.
- The lender must provide adequate prior notice.
- The auction must follow a transparent procedure.
- The borrower or legal heirs must receive details of the value realised and dues adjusted.
- Any surplus must be refunded within seven working days from the lender’s receipt of the full auction proceeds.
- If the auction proceeds do not cover the dues, the lender may recover the shortfall according to the loan agreement.
Protections during valuation and storage
You should be present when the collateral is assayed. The lender must give you a certificate or e-certificate showing purity, gross weight, net eligible gold weight, deductions, defects, an image and assessed value.
The gold must be handled and stored under prescribed controls. Applicable charges must appear in the agreement and KFS. Important communication should use the regional language or another language you select.
Keep the certificate, KFS, agreement and repayment receipts safely as your record of the gold and payments.
What happens after full repayment?
After full repayment or settlement, the lender must return the collateral on the same day or within seven working days. Check it against the valuation certificate. If a delay beyond this period is attributable to the lender, compensation is ₹5,000 per day. If the delay is not attributable to the lender, it must communicate the reason.
When might a gold loan be more suitable?
A gold loan may be worth considering when:
- You own eligible gold and are genuinely comfortable pledging it.
- The need is short term and necessary.
- Your repayment source is reasonably clear.
- The complete cost is lower after every charge is included.
- You understand the valuation, gold loan repayment and auction terms.
- You are unlikely to need repeated rollovers or top-ups just to keep the loan running.
When might an unsecured personal loan be more suitable?
A personal loan may be worth considering when:
- You do not want to place jewellery at risk.
- You meet the lender’s income and credit requirements.
- You prefer a predictable EMI structure.
- The complete cost and monthly EMI are affordable.
- The tenure fits your cash flow better.
- You have completed a personal loan comparison instead of accepting the first pre-approved offer.
An unsecured loan is not risk-free. Missed payments can affect your credit history and may lead to recovery action under the agreement and applicable law.
Questions to ask before choosing
- What is the APR?
- How much will I actually receive?
- What is the total amount repayable?
- What charges apply?
- Is repayment through EMIs, periodic interest payments or one bullet payment?
- What happens if I miss a payment?
- When can the gold be auctioned, and after what notice?
- Are there prepayment or foreclosure charges?
- How quickly will the gold be returned after repayment?
- Is the lender an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC?
- Can I repay without another loan?
Gold loan vs personal loan: the final decision
Choose a gold loan only if its cost works and you accept the jewellery risk. Choose a personal loan only if its cost and EMI fit. Use verified platforms and an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC; do not borrow simply because credit is available.
The better loan is not the one that gives you money fastest. It is the one whose cost, repayment structure and risk you fully understand—and can realistically manage.
Frequently asked questions
1. Is a gold loan always cheaper than a personal loan?
No. Its rate may be lower because it is secured, but processing, valuation and other charges matter. Compare the APR, net disbursal and total repayment in each KFS.
2. Can a lender auction pledged gold if an EMI is missed?
Not immediately merely because one EMI was missed. Triggers depend on the agreement, and the lender must follow the applicable notice and transparent auction process.
3. How much loan can I receive against my gold?
It depends on eligible gold content, purity, recognised value, LTV ceiling and lender policy. Current maximum consumption-loan LTVs are 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% above ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh. These are ceilings, not guaranteed amounts or percentages of the invoice value.
The Match My Money perspective
At Match My Money, we believe the right loan is not necessarily the one with the fastest expected disbursal. A gold loan may cost less but risks an asset; an unsecured personal loan has no collateral, but repayment must remain affordable.
On Match My Money, you can compare loan amount, tenure, interest rate and indicative disbursal information for personal-loan options.
Check the lender’s KFS and agreement for the complete cost, including APR, charges, EMI, net disbursal and total repayment.
